None of Your Business: A Field Guide to Minding Yours
A (mostly) tongue-in-cheek field guide to the ancient art of minding your own business — plus the surprisingly real privacy and boundary lessons hiding inside the phrase.
There are few sentences in the English language as satisfying as "that's none of your business." It's a door, politely closed. A boundary, elegantly drawn. At Business Dog, we are, technically, always in the business of business — so we consider ourselves qualified to write the definitive field guide to its opposite.
A brief taxonomy of "none of your business"
The Classic. Deployed when someone asks what you paid for something. Timeless. Undefeated.
The Financial. "How much do you make?" is a question that has ended more dinner parties than politics. Your salary is, in most contexts, gloriously none of anyone's business.
The Corporate. When a company says a decision is "confidential" or "internal," that is the professional dialect of "none of your business." (See our guide to corporate speak.)
The Digital. Every "we value your privacy" popup is a company cheerfully collecting data that, morally, should be none of its business.
The surprisingly real lesson
Here's the twist: "mind your own business" is genuinely excellent life and business advice.
In life: Comparison is the thief of joy, and most of that comparison comes from being deeply invested in things that are, definitionally, not your business. The happiest people run their own race.
In business: The most successful founders are almost boringly focused on their customers, their product, their numbers. They don't spend energy on competitors' drama, industry gossip, or what the haters say. They mind their business — literally.
The privacy angle (the actually useful part)
The phrase also points at something real: your information is a form of property, and you're allowed to guard it.
- Keep your business and personal finances separate (also great bookkeeping)
- Guard your seed phrase, passwords, and personal data like the assets they are — see how to buy $BUSINESS safely
- You don't owe anyone your numbers — not your salary, not your revenue, not your net worth
- "No" is a complete sentence, and so is "that's confidential"
The CowDog philosophy
Our CEO, a dog in a cow costume, runs a fictional empire of rare fish derivatives and premium silence subscriptions. When asked about the company's actual financials, CowDog offers a single, dignified response:
"It's none of your business. It's just business."
Both things are true at once. And honestly? That's the whole vibe.
Mind your business. Build your thing. Let the rest be, respectfully, not your concern.
